Today is
Martin Luther King Day and many of our friends and relatives are having a paid day off in celebration. There have been parades, speeches, picnics and other remembrances in different parts of the city touting the fallen black leader and his contribution to civil rights in America. And, that's as it should be. Though not all our racial problems have been solved, much progress has been made and for that we should all be thankful! (Download an audio file of the 'I Have a Dream' speech
here.) That's why it's unfortunate that whenever we hear the name MLK we can't help but remember how, after Mikey's misbegotten acquittal, his official website (MJJSource) declared the day as historically significant as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the release from prison of Nelson Mandela and
the birth of Martin Luther King! Yes, we were well aware that Mikey sites were rife with lunatic odes to everything from his dance moves to his preceived "sexiness" [violent shudder] and that on any given day his aplogists would come up with the most twisted excuses for this obviously criminal actions. In spite of all that we were taken by surprise by the utter hubris and absolutely insane mindset that might even place MLK in the same sentence with MJJ. His fans' equation of Mikey dodging another boy-fondling bullet with these milestones of freedom made us want to forego our normally non-violent lifestyle and punch something. I don't know anyone who'll remember the day Mikey was acquitted as a day of celebration, a day to remember for its cultural and societal importance, other than in the most negative way. Remember the sheer craziness
here.
